A contemporary of female conductors such as Mexico's Alondra de la Parra and France's Arian Matiakh and Laurence Equilbey, she includes symphonic works by women in her concert programming. 

Gražinytė-Tyla shares the fact that she is one of the first women to be appointed Music Director of major orchestras, such as Marin Alsop, who made history in 2007 by being the first woman to be appointed Music Director of a major American orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra

Other prominent contemporary female conductors are Alicia Farnham, founder and director of the Society of Women Conductors, which offers workshops for aspiring women, or the Canadian Barbara Hannigan, promoter of contemporary opera.

Biografia

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla was born in Vilnius in 1989 into a family of musicians. Her father, Romualdas Gražinis, was a choir conductor and her mother, Sigutė Gražinienė, a pianist and singer. Mirga's grandmother, Beata Vasiliauskaitė-Šmidtienė, was a violinist and her grandfather's brother, Bernardas Vasiliauskas, was the organist at the Archdichedral Basilica in Vilnius.  

An art student, at the age of 11 she chose to specialize in choral conducting and made her debut as a conductor two years later. She continued her musical studies in Austria, at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz. After graduating in 2007, she completed her training at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Felix Mendelssohn Bartoldy in Leipzig and at the University of the Arts in Zurich. 

Gražinyte-Tyla was discovered by the German Conducting Forum (Deutsches Dirigentenforum) in April 2009. 

Winner of the Nachwuchsregisseure der Salzburger Festspiele award in 2012, she subsequently made her debut with the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester in a symphony concert at the Salzburger Festspiele. 

She conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra as Associate Conductor from 2016 to 2017. In addition, she was appointed Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater from 2015 to 2017. 

She is the first woman to be appointed conductor of the Birmingham City Symphony Orchestra from 2016 until the 2020-21 season. 

She has conducted the most important orchestras internationally as in 2018 she made her debut with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in her debut at the Carnegie Hall in New York. 

An exclusive artist of Deutsche Grammophon since 2018, she was honored at the Grammophon Classical Music Awards as well as with an Opus Klassik Award in 2020. 

In 2019, the Lithuanian state awarded her with the Lithuanian Award for the World Promotion of Lithuania

In 2019 she presented the music of her compatriot Raminta Šerkšnytė with the Lietuvos nacionalinis simfoninis simfoninis orkestras, the Vilniaus savivaldybės choras and the Kremerata Baltica.
